My Precious Stubborn Boy
Snoopy gave me quite a scare last week.
Our dogwalker called me at work to tell me that something was wrong with him, he was shaking, couldn’t stand..and just laying around and didn’t look right. I immediately left work, calling the Vet on the way to advise I would be bringing him in after assessing the situation. When I got home, dogwalker was outside with him, and he was laying on the grass and would not get up - his little body was shaking. I picked him up to put him on his feet, and he slowly fell back down into my arms. We got in the car and drove to the Vet.
I put him up on the table in the exam room, and Dr McG did his thing, checked vitals , asked questions about his symptoms, etc. He was sure it was neurological from the vital signs - everything else looked good.
He took blood and I waited for the results.
No toxins, everything came back clean.
He called a colleague and explained the symptoms and that Snoopy was a Fanconi dog. Colleague thought it was a blood clot (stroke)….
I started falling apart right then and there.
Dr McG went through our options, various tests could be run at the Vet Hospital costing thousands of dollars and only telling us what happened - not curing anything.
We discussed if it was serious enough to put him down. I do not want Snoopy to ever be in amy pain, he was not - but he also could not stand or move…..and he has Fanconi on top of this.
Dr McG brought Snoopy to me, and we sat on the floor talking it out while I help Snoopy in my lap - I was a wreck, wondering if I was a bad Mom for even considering “option B’…..he assured me I was not.
Then, Snoopy tried to pick himself up off of my lap….and walked around the room, still losing his footing…but he was attempting to get around.
Dr McG then states “Or, we can go with Option C”….
What’s Option C?
Snoopy is a stubborn little dog who has proven us wrong in the past, how about we keep him overnight for observation and see what happens?
My Vet, who I feel blessed to have, took Snoopy home with him so he could be right there if anything did happen……
I cried more that afternoon than I have in a long time. I am not ready to say goodbye to my pooch.
I got a text message about 9pm that Snoopy was doing fine and not to worry!
The next morning, I went back to the Vet’s office to pick my Boy up, and he came running out of the back all happy to see me!
He’s fine.
He’s back to chasing squirrels, taking me for walks, and being himself.
We’re not sure if it was actually a blood clot, or some sort of toxin that he got into.
It doesn’t matter, as long as my Boy is okay and back home where he belongs! I’ve even let him sleep on the bed since he’s been back!!
Sidenote: Snoopy had his Fanconi bloodwork (venous blood gas test) this past Friday, and his numbers are GOOD - almost normal!! Right where we want them to be!!
